Mets 8 - Orioles 0
A large collective sigh of relief could be heard from Mets fans as Pedro Martinez pitched an efficient 3 innings against the Orioles in his spring training debut. In his 35-pitch outing, Martinez limited the O's to a single hit on a pop up that Wright and Lo Duca collided going after. Martinez walked 1 and struck out 2. Martinez was very happy with his outing:

I felt pretty good. It was good to get it out of the way and get back with the team. I felt the toe a couple of times, but it felt good enough to go out there and do what I had to do.

... For the first time out, I was really impressed with the way I was hitting the strike zone. I was really pumped up to get out there. It was a big load off my shoulders.

Victor Zambrano took over in the fourth and pitched 6 innings to finish the game. He struggled with his control in his last couple of innings, but had a very nice outing. In 6 innings, the O's managed only 4 hits off Zambrano. He allowed a pair of walks and struck out 4. After the game, coach Rick Peterson called Zambrano's effort "outstanding", which indeed it was. For a team with so many questions about the starting staff, today was a very good day.

The Mets had a solid day at the plate, aided by an Orioles defense that took the day off. The O's made 4 official errors and played an overall sloppy game. Jose Reyes and Victor Diaz both had 2-hit games for the Mets. Anderson Hernandez went 1-3 with a double, and started an outstanding double play that bailed out Zambrano.

The Mets will be home again in Port St. Lucie against the Dodgers on Monday. Kris Benson will face the Mets, while Pedro Martinez will pitch his first start of the spring. The game will be televised on SNY, for those of you not being screwed by your cable system.
