Glavine Deserved Better

Braves 2 - Mets 1

For all of the ups and downs that Tom Glavine has experienced over his Mets' career, I wish I had a dime for every time I said the three word title of this post. Betrayed by a stumbling Mets offense and a third baseman that picked a bad series to remember that he's only 23, Glavine pitched his heart out against the Braves and came away with just another depressing loss.

I'll leave it to others to recap this game, I just don't have the heart for it right now. Just some quick thoughts:

Woodward has class. He was the best part of the Mets bench last year, and along with Castro is the only real contributor this year. I'm willing to give Julio Franco some time and some at bats, but Jose Valentin is an ugly 0-15 on the season. He makes Endy Chavez look like a viable major league hitter by comparison. Willie and Omar can support these guys until the cows come home, but the Mets are going to have to address the shocking lack of production off this bench. It bit them against Atlanta, and I'm afraid that this can turn into a diabolical subplot if not addressed.

I think this west coast road trip might be the best thing to happen to this team right now. Get away and start over. Kaz Matsui has a couple of weeks before the fans get their first shot at him. I wish I could work up some optimism for him, but Victor sucked me dry yesterday.

Steve Trachsel opens the series against the Padres tomorrow night at 10:05 ET. He'll be opposed by Padres' ace Jake Peavy.
