The Imperfect End to an Imperfect Day

Nationals 9 - Mets 5 (10)

Shades of Braden Looper. Billy Wagner blew a chance to save rookie Brian Bannister's first major league win, but gave up the tying home run to Nationals rookie 3B Ryan Zimmerman. Jorge Julio came into the game in the tenth and got beaten up for five runs, and it added up to a tough loss for the Mets.

Brian Bannister carried a 4-0 lead and a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but gave up a 3-run homer to Nick Johnson. Still, he gave the Mets 6 strong innings and left with a lead in his debut. Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman each pitched scoreless innings to give Wagner a chance to notch his second save, but Zimmerman spoiled the party.

The Mets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Nationals starter John Patterson, but then the offense stalled until scoring a run on Felix Rodriguez' balk with 2 outs in the tenth. Xavier Nady and Carlos Delgado both had their first home runs as Mets.

The Mets will play the rubber game against the Nationals tomorrow night with Pedro Martinez getting his first start. Ramon Ortiz takes the hill for Washington.
