I'll be back with the Aaron Sele preview late tonight. Just a couple of quick items:
Howard Megdal, who brought us all the very funny Offseason Survival Guide on the Mets Geek web site earlier this winter, is now at Gotham Baseball with his own top ten prospects list.
In a New York Times story on the growing importance of middle relievers in the game, Murray Chass quotes Omar Minaya on the signing of a certain lefty reliever:
We tried to invest dollars in a frontline starter. We weren't able to get one. Instead of investing dollars in a mediocre market, I said, "Who is the best reliever in the market?" and it was Schoeneweis.
Many have indicated some skepticism to me at the oft-injured left-hander getting the 3-year deal the Mets were seemingly unwilling to give to Chad Bradford. I'm by lying to you if I claimed that I didn't have some questions myself. It will be very interesting to watch how well Schoeneweis performs in New York this season.
Finally, Ed from the Mets Fever blog was kind enough to pass along some insights he received from the Red Reporter blog on 3 former Reds who will be competing for jobs here next season:
Dave Williams is tough because he really didn't do a whole lot while with the Reds, and what he did do was fairly bad. I think he's a fairly typical number five starter, probably with a future as a reliever. Sean Casey might not have been worth a lot with the contract he had, but many Reds fans still felt hosed to just get back Dave Williams when Cincinnati traded him away.Jason Standridge throws hard, and I always felt like he had potential, but never really lived up to it. I definitely never felt comfortable when he was in the game, mostly because he has serious control issues. If he didn't walk so many hitters he'd probably be decent.
Scott Schoeneweis only threw 14 innings for the Reds, but he was awesome. His ERA was well under 1.00. Small sample size so it's tough to tell if he's really turned a corner, but I could see him being a dependable LOOGY.
