Forfeit

Twins 9 - Mets 0
Played Tuesday, June 19, 2007

I don't think it's a coincidence that the final score of this one was the official score of a forfeited game. This game wasn't a third of the way over before it seemed as if the Mets should save themselves some time and just surrender. Then again, since the whole thing took a little under 2-1/2 hours, it wouldn't have mattered that much, anyway.

Since Jorge Sosa came up and started pitching well, it was obvious that on nights that he didn't have his good slider he would be ineffective. As with his last time out against the Dodgers this was the case, and the results were even uglier -- assisted by some bad defense behind him.

I'm not going to go crazy analyzing this one. I do have to say, however, that I was disappointed that the fans felt the need to boo Jorge Sosa when he was leaving the field. Keep in mind that this is a guy who came out of nowhere to stabilize the rotation when Pelfrey couldn't get it done. He has 6 wins in 9 starts, including 2 of the Mets 4 June wins. Yes, he's been awful his last 2 times out, but what are we booing? Do we think he wasn't trying, or have we become such poor sports when things don't go our way that we feel that bad outings deserve our scorn? I swear, I feel like a relic from a kinder, gentler era and I'm not even 50 yet. (I know that feels very old to some of you but trust me, your criteria for what constitutes truly old keeps going up as you reach another milestone). If Jorge Sosa doesn't win another game for this team the past month and a half should earn him a little slack. Jeez...

Although I am grateful for the excellent contributions of my fellow writers here, I have no plans of stepping back into strictly an editorial role. I started this thing in the first place because I love to write and I love the Mets, and blogging here keeps me somewhat sane. If you haven't had enough already, more bio info can be found here.

For what it's worth, I don't think the booing was at Sosa. I think it was just a point in a really bad, frustrating game when the pitcher came out and people let off steam - at the entire damn ballclub.

At least that's what the boo-ers in our section felt. 4 errors?!

Well we are getting close to the 500 mark, but going the wrong way. I remember when that was a goal we were shooting for, and here comes the Phillys. I hope we pull out soon, if we don't and slip out of 1st place I am afraid we will start dealing and trading in a panic and give away (with little in return) our future. I was reading about some names in trade ideas and found them talking about Michael Young 2b/ss from Tex. and Ichiro Suzuki o/f from Sea.Mar... Man you would have to give 1/2 of the team away for them I would think. But in lala land they would look very good in the lineup. I am reaching for straws looking for the rainbow, anything to stay true orange and blue. But I must confess I have not worn my Met hat for two weeks now, If they win 10 in a row I'll wear it from the pulpit, with much thanksgiving.

MG - I hear you, I feel the same way about the club lately. Still, I doubt Sosa was thinking they're not really booing me, they're just frustrated at the team.
------------------------
Al - I agree. The problem with so many of the names being bandied about is the price tag.

Rev Al - Come now. For better or worse? For richer or poorer? In sickness and in health? I make it a point to wear my Mets hat or t-shirt after a particularly brutal defeat (or, lately, a string of 'em).

Those who show their colors when things aren't so good get to wear them even more proudly when things turn around. Get that cap back on your head, Rev!

I was thinking the same thing about the forfeit. Ya gotta believe but yesterday was a massacre. Also about the booing thing, I've learned that some fans will always boo despite our pleas for them to cease. They could be booing at Sosa, or the fact that the Mets were losing, but some people just love to and will always boo.

NostraDennis and all my Met pals, I repent, I'll put my Met hat on now. In my heart I felt something was not right. Thanks Brother, it feels good again. Yeah! Lets go Mets.:) :)
