Tigers 8 - Mets 7
Played Saturday, June 9, 2007
After a May that featured a 4-1 record, and ERA just a sliver over 2 and a WHIP under .9, Oliver Perez was probably due to stink. As I recall, even Tom Seaver did occasionally. Actually, for an admittedly bad game where he lacked control of his slider, Perez managed to keep the Mets in it. Contrasted with Sunday's game, that counts for something. Personally, I'd be surprised if Perez didn't follow this up with a really solid start.
Of more concern to me personally is Guillermo Mota, who looks like he may have benefited from a few more rehab appearances before returning from steroid exile. On the other hand, it seems rather premature to ascribe his early struggles to being weaned off the Juice, as some are doing. He definitely doesn't look sharp with any of his pitches now, and the Tigers made him pay.
It was nice to see the Mets battle back into this one after falling behind by 5 runs. It didn't earn them anything other than a pat on the back in this game, but they really need to rediscover their scrappiness. It would also be nice if they could start producing better with runners in scoring position.
Now that we have gotten further into the season I've done something different with the pitching charts. Each game entry will feature the last 5 starts for the starting pitcher, with a link below to updated season stats:
