...And Batting Cleanup, John Maine

Mets 8 - Pirates 4
Played Tuesday, July 24, 2007

If Moises Alou doesn't get back soon, he might find he's lost his job to another right-handed slugger. Besides being the best pitcher on the team this season, John Maine is also serving notice that he is prepared to carry the Mets with his bat, too. He's only one behind Alou in home runs now, although admittedly his .114/.200/.200 batting line doesn't quite stack up with Moises' .318/.374/.445.

More importantly for Mets fans was Maine's solid performance on the mound. After enduring some difficulty over his first four innings, Maine settled in to a very strong 7 inning performance. He issued only a single walk, and drove in as many runs as he gave up. It's hard to argue with that.

Pardon the short post today. I'll be going to the game tonight with Greg Prince from Faith and Fear in Flushing, and my long excursion from central Connecticut must begin shortly.

About Mike: I was the original writer on this web site, actually its only writer for the first 15 months of existence. Although I am grateful for the excellent contributions of my fellow writers here, I have no plans of stepping back into strictly an editorial role. I started this thing in the first place because I love to write and I love the Mets, and blogging here keeps me somewhat sane. If you haven't had enough already, more bio info can be found here.
