A Quick Exit for John Maine

Cubs 6 - Mets 2
Played Saturday, August 4, 2007

John Maine has given us a lot of reasons to forget that he is 26 years old, but yesterday he reminded us that he's still a young pitcher learning on the job. After yet another blown call at first base in a year that has been rife with poor umpire decisions on the bases, Maine lost his composure and then the game.

It's hard to kill Maine for this one. For the most part he's been excellent this season, and has gotten himself out of several tight spots in big games. Even in this game he might have had a much better fate if umpire Marty Foster hadn't blown the call at first.

The offense wasn't great, but Lilly has been enjoying an excellent season, and he was very solid yesterday. Moises Alou's pair of homers was an excellent sign for an offense that can use his solid middle of the order bat. Nice game too for Castillo, who seemed to finally relax a little at the plate.

They have a chance tonight to capture a second straight tough road series tonight, and at the very least you want to see them come out and really bring their A game in this one.

About Mike: I was the original writer on this web site, actually its only writer for the first 15 months of existence. Although I am grateful for the excellent contributions of my fellow writers here, I have no plans of stepping back into strictly an editorial role. I started this thing in the first place because I love to write and I love the Mets, and blogging here keeps me somewhat sane. If you haven't had enough already, more bio info can be found here.
