Game 46: Rockies 6 - Mets 5 (13)
Sorry to be so late with this. I had a large project going in the yard today, and it these games are getting hard to write about. As I sit here and type these words, the Mets have already ended their losing streak this afternoon in Colorado, so that makes it a little easier.
Just a few thoughts on this game. It looked like Oliver Perez was getting himself turned around in his last couple of starts, particularly that nice one in Yankee Stadium last time out. Then he goes out, walks 8 batters, and needs 100 pitches to get through 5 innings. I console myself somewhat that he never seems to pitch well in Colorado. Between his fly ball tendencies and the effect of that thin mile-high air on his slider, Ollie has a 7.23 ERA in 7 starts there. Hopefully he'll revert back to good Ollie next time out.
I like Billy Wagner, but a big-time closer nails that one down. Wagner is a great pitcher, but his reputation is that in big games he isn't always so wonderful. That was certainly the case last night. Where's Skip Lockwood when you need him...
Aaron Heilman has pitched 7 times in May and has allowed runs in 4 of those games. He needs to strap one on and turn this around. Sanchez' velocity is still down and they could really use an effective Heilman along with Sanchez. It's already at the point where you can't afford to put Aaron in a close game.
