Game 157: Mets 6 - Cubs 2
If the Mets didn't make the deal for Johan Santana this past winter, they would be playing out the string right now. Whether or not they make the playoffs with him is still an open question, but the fact that they still have a chance is mostly due to his presence on the mound every fifth day.
Rather than sulk about all of the potential wins his bullpen has blown this season, Santana has taken it upon himself to pitch deeper into games and give the Mets a better chance to win. No matter how this season turns out, this is one highly-paid superstar who has -- as much as possible with such crazy numbers -- earned his money.
I will be going to the game tonight, looking forward to seeing Greg Prince one last time at the ballpark in '08 and meeting prolific Mets author Matthew Silverman. I'm looking forward to it. I only hope the Mets cooperate.
This should prove to be my last game at Shea. I hope against hope that I will hear more cheering than booing. Sadly, despite the fact this team is still fighting for a playoff spot, there are a significant number of fans who seem more interested in venting their anger rather than cheering the team on.
See you tomorrow.
