Looking back to my last post date, I've taken over three weeks off from this blog. This was never part of any plan, but simply reflected the fact that my attention was elsewhere.
I turned 50 on October 20 (the same birthday as Keith Hernandez and Mickey Mantle, by the way) and that seemed to be a good time to contemplate some of the places I have been and where I might still want to go in this life.
While reaching indisputable middle age was somewhat bittersweet, the opportunity over these past few weeks to watch the culmination of history being made was unquestionably gratifying. When I started supporting our president-elect last year, he was still a guy with a funny name that a lot of people didn't even know. I just found it impossible to think much about baseball these past few weeks as the election approached.
To be honest with you, after more than three years of writing this blog I needed some time off from the Mets, too. But now the election is over and we're into the hot stove season full-tilt. Congrats to the Phillies, whose ascension to champions seemed more and more certain as almost all the pundits picked the other guys.
I'll be back with a post either later today or tomorrow. If you missed it, please check out Barry Duchan's first post in a brand new series he is writing on Mets second baseman. There will be a new post every Sunday. We've also featured other terrific posts during my time away by Chuck Rothman and NostraDennis.
By the way, it's not too early to think about your Christmas shopping. For the discerning Mets fan, there could be no more prestigious gift than a selection from Gary, Keith and Ron's Pitch In For a Good Cause Foundation. What's more, between now and November 28, use the coupon code BLOGGER and save 10% off your entire order. You can save money and feel the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting a terrific cause.
