Last night I was fortunate enough to attend a Mets game with Dana Brand, Greg Prince and Matthew Silverman. Dana was kind enough to provide the tickets and ride to the game (we live about 20 miles apart up here in Connecticut), and Greg and Matt kicked in some great company and Mets talk.
It was only the third game I saw in person this year and, almost miraculously perhaps, the first loss. It struck me after the game how much of a microcosm of the season this loss was -- when the Mets manage to score a few runs the starting pitcher invariably is absolutely pummeled, while a fine start gets "rewarded" with little run support.
As the game rocked back and forth between tedious and frustrating, it also occurred to me that I had the good fortune to be sitting with three guys who have had as much as anyone to do with providing Mets fans willing to step away from video games and Twitter feeds with quality literary entertainment of a more traditional nature.
Dana, who has already given us the outstanding Mets Fan book a couple of years ago has just come out with The Last Days of Shea, which we will be reviewing soon.
Greg has produced the equally terrific Faith and Fear in Flushing: An Intense Personal History of the New York Mets as well as providing daily one of the finest blogs on the planet to Mets fans who aren't afraid of a little less white space on the page.
Last but not least, Matt has essentially coauthored about half the books ever produced on the Metropolitans (only a slight exaggeration) and is working on a new one about the 1969 Mets. We'll be reviewing Greg's book and Dana's new one in the very near future -- promise.
One thing that occurred to me while enjoying the illustrious company was how much I have enjoyed doing this blog and how much I miss it being an integral part of my daily life. Things have calmed down with my Mom to some extent, and I thought I would be back to daily blogging a couple of weeks ago. A "rush" project for a client has delayed that somewhat, but we're going to give it another try now.
I thought over the next few days I'd post a few short takes on some issues that I'll be covering in more depth as I get my "blog legs" back. I should have the first of them up tonight. Please check back.
