About Mike's Mets

Hi, I'm Mike Steffanos, and I created the original Mike's Mets blog on the Blogger platform back in August of 2005. At the time, I was 46 years old, which was a rather ancient time of life to be getting involved with something that was mostly being done by people that grew up with the internet, not people like myself who remember when electronic calculators and Pong were exciting new things. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't the first representative of my generation blogging, but I did have to explain to most of my friends what a blog was.

I moved over to a hosted Movable Type blog in February of 2006 with my own mikesmets.com registered domain. The readership built up steadily over the next few seasons, and I was fortunate enough to integrate the work of some other terrific contributors onto the site. At our peak, we enjoyed a base of regular readers that numbered in the thousands.

Unfortunately, though, the decline of the Mets' fortunes after consecutive collapses in 2007 and 2008 was mirrored by some upheaval and disappointments in my own life. My contributions became much less and very irregular as I struggled to get my own life back in order. For the past decade, the blog was dead, although I kept it alive on the web and always hoped to get back to it.

This picture of me and my dog Rikki was
up on my old blog for several years.

Finally, back in March 2020, the Coronavirus shutdown led to my being laid off from my job. I got the bill for three months of hosting on the site the day I was laid off, and I just couldn't justify to myself the expense of keeping it up any longer.

I looked into moving back to the free Blogger platform where I started 15 years ago. They really did an excellent job of building features into it, and I could even keep my domain name. I had time on my hands, and I realized that I wanted to get back to blogging about the Mets.

It's fun being back. I wish the circumstances were better, of course.

I'm committed to blogging daily during my layoff, and the plan is to continue posting at least 2-3 times a week when l get back to work. Life is too short not to find time to do the things you love.

My two biggest fans,
Nutmeg and Devo

I'm not sure if anyone who read the old blog will find their way here after all these many years, but if you do, please drop me an email or comment if you'd prefer. I'd honestly love to hear from you. Also, I will be posting here regularly if you're inclined to come back.
